Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959) was born in Polička, a small town on the border between Bohemia and Moravia, and was brought up as a conscious Czech. His compositional beginnings were linked to distinctive personalities of Czech music (Bedřich Smetana – Antonín Dvořák – Leoš Janáček – Josef Suk), but he soon decided to respond to music that had already greatly interested him before World War I and especially in the interwar period (Claude Debussy – Igor Stravinsky). In the 1930s, he was able to sovereignly combine his international outlook with his own roots. The introverted composer paid particular attention to the quality of his scores and believed in the artist‘s responsibility to the culture in which he lived. Martinů travelled through many countries (France – USA – Switzerland) and always managed to establish himself without losing his connection to the Czech musical tradition.
